High-performance batteries are the key component of both stationary as well as mobile electric applications. The goal are battery systems with higher power densities, shorter charging times, lower weight, longer lifespans and lower costs. Currently, lithium-ion batteries have the most suitable properties for use as traction batteries. The primary way to achieve cost reductions in the coming years will be to increase the energy density in the cells, reduce the amount of material needed and the resulting manufacturing costs as well as efficiency improvements in the production process of the cells.
